Josephine (nee Carlevato) Witt was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan on November 29, 1921. Iron Mountain is a small town located in the upper peninsula of Michigan just north of the Wisconsin border. She grew up and completed high school in Iron Mountain. Josephine had one sister, Erma, who was 5 years older than her and preceded her in death.
During high school, Josephine was a member of the National Honor Society, which honors top students based on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. She was also very musically inclined in high school and participated in several music clubs and choruses.
After high school, Josephine began a career with Western Union. She rose to the position of office manager and managed several Western Union offices in Michigan and Wisconsin. Josephine worked for Western Union until her marriage in 1949.
On July 23rd, 1949, Josephine married Jim Witt. Jim and Josephine had a wonderful 68+ year marriage until Jim passed away in 2018. Jim also worked for Western Union, which is how they met. They lived in several cities in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa before moving to Mason Christian Village in Mason, Ohio in 2011.
Josephine was a devoted Catholic throughout her lifetime. She served as a teacher's aide for many years at a Catholic elementary school in Racine, Wisconsin. Josephine was also very active in church related activities in all the cities that she lived in.
Josephine had a variety of hobbies and interests throughout her lifetime. She was very accomplished at making beautiful quilts which can be found in the homes of her family. Josephine was an avid gardener and she enjoyed spending countless hours creating beautiful gardens everywhere she lived. In Des Moines, Iowa, she created a spectacular rock garden on the side of a hill in her back yard. Josephine also loved to feed the birds. She always had a variety of bird feeders in all the places she lived. In addition to the birds, she never minded feeding all the hungry squirrels and chipmunks in the neighborhood, as well.
Josephine was a very good-hearted person who loved spending time with her family. She was a very spirited individual who was not shy in speaking her mind, but always in a fun and likeable way.
Josephine has 2 children: her son, Jim Jr., and his wife, Carol, live in Cincinnati and her daughter, Mary, lives in Chicago. Josephine has 2 grandchildren: Diane, who lives in Cincinnati, and Kevin, who lives in Sunnyvale, California.
Josephine will truly be missed by all her family and friends.
