Ralph C. Seibel

July 31, 1926 — April 5, 2018

Ralph Carl Seibel    July 31, 1926 to April 5, 2018

Ralph was born on July 31, 1926 in Sandusky, Ohio to John Seibel and Leah Heeter Seibel, the third and last child behind his oldest sister Irene and older brother John.   A child of the depression, he learned a strong work ethic and the value of a dollar early in life.  He mentioned many times that he has paid into Social Security every year since his first job at age 7, helping deliver newspapers and milk bottles.

His high school years were colored by the ever growing turmoil of World War II.  He enlisted in the army as soon as he graduated and soon qualified for flight training school; however, the war ended as just as his training started.  He used the GI Bill to attend college at Bowling Green State University, where he met his wife, Marty.   They married four years later, when Marty graduated.

Ralph's career in industrial engineering centered on corrugated paper products, initially about packaging and eventually toward more creative uses in display stands and related products.  It took him from Sandusky to Detroit and Toledo, before he and two friends decided to start their own packaging venture in Flint Michigan. It was during these days that Ralph also began various leadership roles in the Presbyterian Church, as a deacon, in the synod, and as a "substitute" for pastors on vacation or other leaves.  Both he and Marty loved the music of the church and were members of all of their choirs from the 60s to 2000.  Later, Ralph's career would take him to Lawrence Kansas, where he retired with over 40 years in the corrugated paper industry.

In his spare time, Ralph loved to fish, play golf, and was an avid fan of the University of Michigan and the University of Kansas.  After retirement, he expanded his hobbies to a number of public service roles both in local civic involvement, his church, community senior assistance programs and as a voice over man in a local radio station.

Ralph was predeceased by his wife of over 67 years, Martha Chapman Seibel; his mother, Leah Hewitt; his father, John Seibel; his sister Irene Johansen; and brother, John Seibel.  He is survived by his son, Ralph Chapman (Tad) Seibel, with his wife, Patricia Padilla Seibel, granddaughter, Lesley Seibel, grandson Benjamin Joel Seibel with his wife, Megan Dickson Seibel, great-grandchildren Calvin Seibel and Milo Seibel; his second son, William Lee Seibel, his wife Menyan Cheng Seibel, grandson, David William Seibel, granddaughter Colleen Elizabeth Finland, husband Maxwell Finland and great-granddaughter Scarlett Finland.
