Monique Friedrich King (née Mixner), age 46 of Mason, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11. Monique is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Michael D. King, and their three daughters, Margot, Ellie and Lucy. Her parents, Melvin and Donna Mixner (née
Friedrich) and her brother, Brad.
Monique personified presence, possessing all the characteristics of a passionate, vivacious, and fierce woman. Always putting her family and others in front of herself, Monique was a confidant and a rock for everyone she loved. She showed poise and dignity in fighting her illness, while always remaining a loving mom, fierce debater, an avid reader, a thrill-seeker, an animal lover, a people-person, and, of course, the life of the party. She was a friend like no other who made all of us better people and defined the meaning of everlasting friendship and unconditional love.
Monique was a graduate of Charles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio. She studied speech therapy at Ohio University. While at OU, she was a devoted sister in the Pi Beta Phi sorority. As a Pi Phi, she developed a strong commitment to philanthropy which included tutoring adults in the Appalachia area. Immediately following her undergraduate studies, she earned her master’s in speech therapy at Case Western Reserve University.
She has been a speech therapist in the Mason City School District for 10 years and she remained committed to her students throughout her illness. Her speech therapy work with children, specifically those with autism, was not simply a career, it was a great passion and joy. She received so much pleasure from seeing their progress and was a constant advocate for them. It was through her commitment and care that they gained not only the ability to communicate, but also a similar sense of confidence and fortitude that Monique exuded.
With such a beautiful ease with children, it was no wonder that Monique was the best mom. Her greatest accomplishment was raising three beautiful daughters. She always encouraged her girls to be bold in chasing their dreams, to be gentle in loving each other, and to be courageous in living every one of life’s moments, good or bad. She felt strongly about giving her girls an educational environment which fostered strong, independent women. She was immensely proud of the young women they have become; her tenacity, her charisma, and her zest for life will live on in each of them.
In honor of this passionate and connected friend, a celebration of Monique’s life will be held on Sunday, March 18th from 3- 6pm at Manor House 7440 Mason-Montgomery Road Mason, Ohio 45040.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Ursuline Academy.
