Retired Brigadier General David C. Martin

July 25, 1933 — November 3, 2017

Retired United States Army Brigadier General ,

David C. Martin ,

completed his final mission Friday, November 3, 2017.  At the age of 84, David passed away peacefully at Bethesda North Hospital.  He was born Tuesday, July 25, 1933 in Toledo, Ohio to Thomas and Helen (nee Alcock) Martin.

On Friday, May 21, 1965, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, David married his best-friend, Janice (nee Atcher) Martin.  Together they would raise their three sons and daughter, watch their grandchildren and great-grandchildren be born, and experience all that life could provide.  Showing through example how hard work, dedication, and lots of laughter could bestow true happiness.

In 1976, David was promoted to General, making him the youngest to make such an achievement at that time.  Through this position, many took his insight and advice appreciatively.  On many occasions, he would brief Henry Kissinger before meeting with President Richard Nixon.  David selflessly served our country for 26 years.

Education was a priority for David.  Working hard during the day, he went to night school to earn his Bachelors in Political Science, Masters in Political Science, Masters in Management, as well as a Doctorate in Management.  He shared his passion with students as a Professor at American University for 26 years.  David also owned his own consulting business, co-authored text books on management, and was an expert witness in class action lawsuits pertaining to performance appraisal/management.

David worked hard, played hard, and loved hard.  He will be missed by all that knew him.

David was preceded in death by: his parents, Thomas and Helen Martin; sister, Mary Wilkinson; and brother-in-law, Gerald Wilkinson.

David is survived by: his loving wife of 52 years, Janice S. Martin; children, Stephen (Aggie) Martin, Bruce (Joanne) Martin, Mark (Cynthia) Martin and Kathryn (Michael) Carman; grandchildren, Jonathan (Liz Clifford-Martin) Martin, Joshua (Berlyn) Martin, Ariaidne Bacabac (Wham),  Meghan Martin, Kaela Martin, Amanda (Justin) Clampitt, Matthew and Lauren Carman; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Jamison Clampitt; and many other loving family members and friends.
