Thomas A. Powell

August 19, 1941 — September 16, 2017

Thomas A. Powell, born on August 19, 1941, passed peacefully to his eternal home on September 16, 2017, at the age of 76 surrounded by his family in prayer, songs and praise. He was the oldest son of Albert and Irene Powell. Tom was married to his angel, Carolyn (nee Kort) for 53 wonderful years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1960-1966. He is survived by his wife, son, Mark (Julie) Powell, daughter Laura (Shawn) Davies, Uncle Robert (Marlene) Orth, sisters, Kathleen (William) Goodwin, Darlene (Peter) Sargent and brother, Richard (Linda) Powell. He is the proud grandfather of Ruth Davies, Tommy Powell, Leah Davies and Joshua Powell. Tom and Carolyn have always been active in church life. They were members for 35 years at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church. Together they served as Youth Advisors for 6 years.  Tom also served as Interim Lay Youth Leader, Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and Chair of the Trustees. For the past 17 years, Tom and Carolyn attended and were members of Hope Church in Mason, Ohio. While living in Loveland for 35 years, Tom was active in community groups and was the charter Chairman of the Loveland Schools Planning Commission. Tom and Carolyn were Chairs of the Loveland High School Music Boosters for 6 years.  Tom and Carolyn were the founders of TAPCO Products, Inc. in 1976, as an industrial distributor of electric and electronic products used in factory automation. After 24 years, they sold the business in 2000. After retirement, they moved to Mason in 2000. Tom, a published author, also served as a Director on the Board for several local businesses and other non-profit organizations. Tom was an active Rotarian, joining the Rotary Club of Cincinnati in 1987. He was elected as Secretary/Treasurer in 1996-97 and as Club President for 1997-98. He was elected to and served as Rotary District Governor in 2001-02, responsible for 55 Rotary Clubs in southwestern Ohio. Tom was also active at the Rotary Zone and International levels. Tom and Carolyn have traveled the world and also attended many Rotary International Conventions. Both Tom and Carolyn enjoyed the time they spent at their condo in south Florida where they spent most winters of their retirement.  On the lighter side, Tom was also known as the "candy man" because he passed out Werther's gold-wrapped candy to bank tellers, parking lot attendants, toll booth operators, mailmen, clerks and nurses, calling it "smile candy" because it always brought a smile to the recipient. A celebration of Tom's life will be held at Hope Church, 4934 Western Row, Mason, OH, on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 10am, with a reception and luncheon to follow. Memorial donations may be made to Rotary International (www.rotary.org/en/donate - Polio Plus Fund) or The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org) in honor of his father, Albert Powell, who fought this disease for almost 20 years.
