Pauline Mary Mayhall (nee Hrack), age 83, of Mason, Ohio, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 7, 2017. She was born Saturday, August 5, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to Charles and Rose (nee Kozak) Hrack.
Pauline’s family alternated living in Cleveland or Cincinnati due to her father’s job. She was the oldest of 6 children. All of her siblings live in various locations around the US. Pauline attended Regina High School in Norwood Ohio. She then obtained a job as a secretary at an insurance company which is where her ability to use a typewriter was honed. Pauline met Donald and enjoyed dancing at Moonlight Gardens at Coney Island and meeting his wonderful family. They married in 1957. Taking a break from work to raise children Pauline volunteered or worked at St. Agnes parish/grade school in Bond Hill. Going back to office work in the 1970’s was easy for such a good typist. Pauline worked at Schear & Schear CPA’s for the final chapter of her career, where she retired at age 76 in 2009!
Pauline took great pride in being a Secretary/Receptionist for the small CPA firm that was like an extended-family to her for almost three decades. She enjoyed going for long walks, knitting, shopping, and baking her special pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving. Never meeting a stranger, Pauline was quite the social butterfly and could be found talking with anyone. She enjoyed being a grandmother and spending time with her grandsons who brought out her most playful side. Abundant are the memories of her bottle-feeding her grandsons, reading to and playing with them, and chasing them around the house with great joy.
When Pauline entered The Christian Village at Mason (CVM - formerly Mason Christian Village) in 2011 she walked the halls regularly. Everyone knew her name. She helped others at her dining table with their sweaters and walkers. Pauline made friends, but none so special as her 3 cronies Clara, Nola and Loren whom were often seen sitting by the fireplace or in the sunny hallway, going to concerts or church together, or enjoying the Kramer Café.
In February 2016 Pauline entered the Special Care Unit at CVM, as her dementia worsened. During her 11 months there the residents, their loved ones, and staff became an extended-family. There were many laughs and fun activities. Pauline was quite good at chair volleyball and had to be reminded to stay seated! Her bocce ball rolls often were close to the target, possibly from bowling with Donald many years ago. She continued to walk around her unit and through the corridors outside the unit if escorted, until her last outing December 27th, 2016. Pauline progressed through the final stages of dementia rather quickly her last few months. She became ill this past week and her body was not able to recover.
Pauline was preceded in death by: her parents, Charles and Rose Hrack; and her loving husband, Donald G. Mayhall in 2011.
Pauline is survived by: her daughters, Christine Mayhall and Brenda Mayhall (Joseph) Coyle; grandsons, John Stukenberg and James Coyle; siblings, Barbara (Dick) Gerwe, Margaret (Al) Connors, Charlotte Marsh, Joe (BJ) Hrack and Bobby "Hat" Hrack; and many other loving family including nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM at Mason Christian Village, 411 Western Row Road, Mason, Ohio 45040. Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 PM at Mason Christian Village. Pauline will be laid to rest next to her husband, Donald, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery immediately following the service.
