William A. Gressel

William A. "Bill" Gressel, age 86, of Mason, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his loving family Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Chesterwood Village. He was born Sunday, December 29, 1929 in Zanesville, Ohio to Herman and Helen (nee Adams) Gressel.

Bill earned his Bachelors in Chemistry from University of Akron. On Thursday, January 11, 1951, he married his best friend and sweetheart, Shirley Lawyer in Zanesville, Ohio. After their wedding, Bill surprised her with a honeymoon to Niagara Falls. Shirley fondly remembers walking behind the frozen wall of water at the Falls. Bill was quite the handyman to have around the house. His woodworking ability has left a legacy of furniture, lamps, toys, toy boxes and many memories for the family to cherish. Bill enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. A purveyor of pithy wisdom, the family will miss the "Dad-isms" they heard numerous times and will continue to pass them down to the younger generations.

Bill was preceded in death by: his parents, Herman and Helen Gressel; brothers, George Gressel and Herman Gressel; and sisters, Sister Mary Rose Agnes Gressel and Sister Mary Veronica Gressel.

Bill is survived by: his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley A. (nee Lawyer) Gressel; children, Dave (Lisa) Gressel, Mike (Sheila Kelly) Gressel, Denise (Brian) Stretcher, Greg (Beth Ann Newman) Gressel and Beth (Mike) Barfield; grandchildren, Adam Gressel, Luke Gressel, Brenden Gressel, Ryan (Lauren Stacey) Gressel, Eric Stretcher, Sarabeth Stretcher, Bryan (Kylie) Gressel, Katie Gressel, Nathan Gressel, Megan Barfield and Justin Barfield; great-grandson, Luke Gressel; sister, Sister Marie Gressel; and many loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2016 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9080 Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM at the Church with Father Don West presiding. The family will continue to celebrate Bill's life with fellowship and food immediately following the mass. Graveside Service will be held privately for the family.
