Peggy Sue Curtis
(nee Garber), age 58, of Liberty Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at her home in the company of her loving husband and soulmate, Nicholas John Curtis. Peggy was born in Brookville, Ohio on St. Patrick's Day in 1958, to Daniel and Janet Garber and spent most of her life in the Dayton area.
Peggy is survived by: daughters Stacy (Daniel) Bowling and Jennifer (Paul) Sharp, four grandchildren who were the joys of her life, her parents, Dan Garber of Brookville and Janet Lentz of Kissimmee, Florida, her loving stepmother and great friend, Joy (Dan) Garber, her sister Cheri (Russell) Strope, her niece Emily (CJ) Hoce and nephews Erik (Stephanie) Strope and Brian Garber, as well as James Marlow of Kettering, Ohio, the father of her daughters. Her stepdaughters, Meghan Lewis of Seattle and Alexis Curtis of Washington DC also shared a deep love with Peg. Peggy was preceded in death by her admiring younger brother, James Garber.
Peggy spent 32 years in the fire fighter protective clothing business with Lion Apparel in Dayton, Ohio. She rose to become the firm's highest ranking female executive as Vice President of Sales and, in addition to managing a nationwide sales team, she personally led the company to great success in their best foreign markets of Canada and Chile. Following a reorganization at Lion, Peg worked briefly in the thermal imaging camera business, but was delighted at an opportunity to return to her PPE sales roots with Fire-Dex, an innovative full service manufacturer whose culture and leadership meshed perfectly with Peggy's tireless work ethic, blended with a caring spirit and a sense of humor. Within just months of taking over a Fire-Dex sales territory in the southwest, Peggy was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer. She and Nick spent many months in her new territory while she successfully created dramatic sales increases, all the time fighting her terrible disease. However, while Peg continued to enjoy her work, her treatments which included radiation, chemotherapy and finally, an experimental clinical trial at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix proved to be unable to overcome the odds. She took a leave of absence in March and rushed back to Ohio to be with friends and family. If there was a blessing, it is that she had the unflinching support of her new employer as well as the love of a devoted husband, family and friends throughout her journey which, thankfully, ended in peace.
When she wasn't working, Peggy loved playing golf with her friends. She and Nick belonged to Four Bridges Country Club in Liberty Township, Ohio as well as Corte Bella in Arizona. She won a number of individual and team championships at Four Bridges. A celebration of her life will be held at Four Bridges Country Club, 8300 Four Bridges Drive, Liberty Township, OH 45044 on Saturday, June 11 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
