Lifelong Staten Island resident, of New Dorp, Walter J. Griswold, 80, retired USPS Letter Carrier died Thursday in the VA Hospice in Dayton, Ohio.
Mr. Griswold graduated Staten Island Vocational High School in 1953 and joined the US Airforce immediately after, eventually being stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador.
He moved to New Dorp Beach from a Midland Beach after he bought his first home in 1966, with the help of a G.I. Loan , the year before he married.
A well-loved mail carrier for the USPS for over 25 years, the families on his route would often bake him cookies at Christmas time. Walter was a member of the Eden Falls Hunting & Fishing Club in Forestburgh, NY from 1971-1995 and the NY Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons starting in 1971. He served as an Auxillary Police Officer for the 122 Precinct in Staten Island, NY from October 1980 to November 2008. Walter enjoyed painting, hunting, fishing, sports and in his later years, golf. He loved helping people and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Griswold was recently cared for by the nurses with dignity at the Dayton VA Hospice Unit. He moved to West Chester, Ohio after losing his home in Hurricane Sandy.
Walter is survived by: his loving wife of almost 49 years, Elsa (nee Penrice) Griswold; daughters, Kelly Anne Griswold (husband, James Traina) and Stacy (husband, Paul) Hillman; grandchildren, Walter Traina, Anna and Merritt Hillman; brother, John (Barbara) Griswold; 6 nieces and nephews; many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Anna (nee Media) Griswold and his nephew Kevin Griswold.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 12, 2016, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10308 (718) 317-7600. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Margaret RC Church, 560 Lincoln Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10306.
