Daniel Angus MacLellan was born in Medford, MA on Feb 4, 1925 and passed away on Jan 19, 2016 at the age of 90. He is the beloved eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Roderick A. MacLellan long deceased and brother to Leo, Lawrence, Pauline and Lloyd also all deceased. He is survived by his sister Margaret Menz-Calabro of Quincy, MA, sister Janice Sirianni of Dracut, MA, loving wife of 35 years Saw Tin MacLellan, daughter Maria MacLellan-Hutt, and grandchildren Graham and Penelope Hutt of West Chester, OH.
Visitation will be on Sunday January 24, 2016 from 2 PM-4 PM at Mueller Funeral Home located at 6791 Tylersville Road, Mason, OH 45040. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, January 25, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Church located at 9080 Cincinnati-Dayton, Rd., West Chester, OH 45609 followed by a Committal Service and Military Honors at Dayton National Cemetery located at 4400 West Third Street Dayton, OH 45428.
Daniel graduated from St. Clements High School in Boston in 1943 and soon thereafter was drafted to the US Army Air Corp and joined a B-17 combat air crew serving in Europe. He became an aircraft engine instructor before being discharged in 1946. After being recalled for the Korean conflict where he helped monitor Russian atomic bomb testing, he graduated from Boston College in 1952 with a degree in aeronautical engineering.
Upon return Daniel was employed by the Air Force Cambridge Research Center in the 6523 Flight Test Squadron as a flight test technician for 4 years. After which he was employed by Air Reduction Co as a Sales Engineer and worked for AIRCO and M+T Chemical for a brief period of time as a sales engineer selling industrial and cryogenic gases and welding supplies in Ohio.
In 1965, Daniel joined General Electric Aircraft Engine Group and became a technical representative working on military and commercial aircraft engines all over the USA, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. He worked for General Electric for 26 years until his retirement in 1991.
In 1967, he was deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) to the Mediterranean Sea arriving in time for the Israeli 6 day war, retrieving US causalities from the damaged USS Liberty.
Starting in 1972 he became involved in the later phases of the Vietnam War and was assigned to TAC headquarters in Langley, the 7th AF squadron, 37th Tactical Fighter Wing in Phù Cát Vietnam, 42nd Tactical Fighter Wing in Danang Vietnam, 87th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Thailand, and PACAF headquarters in Hawaii. In these assignments, he attended to service requirements of military engine J79, J85-T-58, J39 and survived 22 missile attacks on the Danang airbase. During this time he also obtained a master's degree in Labor Relations.
In 1975, he was deployed to Malaysia Airlines flying DC-10 and Airbus A300 powered by CF6-50C requiring technical support and operation assistance for 4.5 years. He routinely flew to Auckland, NZ through Sydney, Australia for aircraft service checks. He also attended Airbus A300 aircraft school at Airbus in Toulouse, France. While in Malaysia he married his beloved wife in 1980.
In 1981, he was sent to Philippine Airlines in Manila, Philippines, attending to their service requirements and became a father there. He returned to the US that year and was assigned to the Ontario, California Repair shop supporting the top secret Stealth Bomber flight program at Lockheed Aircraft.
Daniel was then assigned to the USMC in New River, North Carolina concerning the T58/TL4 engine powering the CH-46/53 helicopters. His area of responsibility included the MAG-26/29 engine shops, test cell, and fifteen squadrons. He rendered technical assistance and training on a continuing basis covering the flight line, the engine shop, and coordinating with the local NAESU representatives.
In 1985, he relocated to Cincinnati working as an evaluation specialist in flight testing. He remained in this assignment until his retirement from the GE Aircraft Engine Group in 1991. Upon retirement at 67, Daniel continued to live in West Chester, OH for the next 23 years - enjoying life with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
