Leopold Franz Ertl, 93, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Hospice of Cincinnati Blue Ash with his loving family by his side. He was born November 1, 1921 to Leopold and Anna Helene (nee Sander) Ertl in Germany, in the area known as Bohemia. Leo earned a PhD. in chemistry at the University of Goettingen. While student teaching, he met Anna-Elisabeth Lowitz whom he would remain married to for 60 years. While he enjoyed teaching, his true devotion was science. In 1957, he moved with his family from Germany to the United States where he began his fulfilling career working in the Kettering Lab at the University of Cincinnati for over 30 years. Leo loved to travel, play chess, climb mountains, play the piano, and astronomy. He enjoyed gardening, even competing in the Hamilton County Fair. But most of all, Leo enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Leopold and Anna Ertl; sister, Margaret; brother, Wilhelm; and his son, Frank Michael Ertl (September 1, 1957 - July 10, 1958). Leo is survived by: his beloved wife, Anna-Elisabeth "Anneliese" Ertl; daughters, Hildegard (husband, Ken) Bauer, Andrea (husband, Steve) Gearhart and Dorothy Ertl; grandchildren, Jason (wife, Melissa) Cammisa, Cassie (husband, Grant) Giesler, Carrie Gearhart, Melissa Gearhart, Valerie Gearhart, Maggie Ertl Murray, Anna Ertl Murray and Evan Ertl Murray; great-grandchildren, Avery, Connor and Madelyn; and many nieces and nephews.
