Barry B. Breig, 66, loving husband of Barbara (nee Elliot) Breig, selfless father of Michael (Melissa) Breig and Jeff Breig, proud grandfather of baby-girl Breig due in May, nurturing brother of David (Diane) Breig and Joseph Breig, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 with his caring family by his side. Barry was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 16th, 1948 to Bernard and Shirley Breig. While attending Purcell High School, Barry was the editor of the school newspaper, earning several awards in his time there. He also showcased his natural athleticism playing catcher on the baseball team. Having developed a deep love of music growing up in a family of talented musicians, Barry played the trombone in his high school's marching band. His talent earned him an invitation to play in the Orange Bowl as part of the All-City Catholic Band. As a lifelong erudite, Barry's love of knowledge was continual, spending 12 years after graduation from Purcell exploring different interests and teachings, which he loved sharing with others. Barry's logical personality prevailed and he went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati. Barry's professional career began at The Cincinnati Enquirer; the start of many professional and personal journeys. It was at The Cincinnati Enquirer he met his future wife, Barbara. His self-taught programming and creative problem solving skills led to him being quickly positioned as the Programming Manager. An opportunity as Director of Information Technology at the Buffalo News, led Barry, Barbara, and their son, Michael, to move to Buffalo, New York. Their youngest son, Jeff, was born in Buffalo. Across his 15 year career at The Buffalo News, Barry was promoted to Vice-President of Systems and Planning. During this time he was twice elected Chairman of the Hewlett-Packard user's group, Interex, a board he served on for many years. Barry continued his career in newspapers and technology as the Vice President of Information Technology at The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi. Barry's decision to return to Cincinnati, to be nearer to family, led to a position with Triplefin as their Vice President of Information Technology. Barry finished out his long career in information technology at Chally Group as the Director of Information Technology. Every day, Barry woke up feeling fortunate he was able to earn a living doing what he found so fulfilling. Outside of his professional life, Barry was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking and camping. He was a fan of baseball, basketball, and football, sharing his passion with not only the children he raised, but also those he patiently coached and expertly developed over many years. He was a talented carpenter, creating gazebo and arbor masterpieces, always ensuring he taught Michael or Jeff something along the way. When he wasn't outside, Barry could be found working on computers, challenging his family to a game of Scrabble, listening to Pete Seeger, reading voraciously, or working on the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles. Barry will be forever remembered as a man who valued integrity and loyalty. He will be fondly recalled as an intelligent and patient man, whose kind gentle heart coupled with a selfless personality, were evident to all those he interacted with. His willingness to make sacrifices for others, especially his family, left everlasting impressions that will never be forgotten. Barry had the remarkable ability to turn any event, positive or negative, into a valuable life lesson. He passed these lessons on to those around him - ensuring that even after he is gone, he will continue to make an impact in the lives of those he touched.
