Kenneth Hayes Passed away of respiratory failure 7:26a 12/8/08 12/24/1933 " 12/6/2008 Survived by: his loving wife and partner Eilene Huffman Hayes, his children: EK Kip Hayes, Jr, Chris Hayes, Carol Kay Hayes & husband Craig Johnson; and the mother of his children, Dolores Roseth; his stepchildren: Julie Willard & husband Bobby; Kim Woolford and husband Randy, Randy Teffeteller and wife Trina and his beloved eight grandchildren: Matthew and Christian Willard, Ellie and Ethan Woolford, Austin, Alec, Andrew & Anthony Teffeteller Ken was born in New Brunswick, NJ on 12/24/1933 to Robert Francis and Catherine Houghton Hayes; he was the youngest of three children. His father was an Irish policeman and his mother was a homemaker. Ken liked to say he was born at St Peters Hospital, attended St Peters schools and attended St Peters Church " all in New Brunswick. After graduation from St Peters High School he came to California where his sister Kay was working so he could attend UCLA. He got a job as a copyboy at Los Angeles Times in 1950, and as he was still only 17, he got a work permit which he kept framed in his office as Head Librarian for the Los Angeles Times where he worked until 1981. In 1955 he met and married Dolores Roseth and they had three children: 1956, Edward Kenneth Hayes, Jr. called Kip ; in 1960 Christopher Keith; 1962, Carol Kathleen, affectionately called Carol Kay. Ken was a huge UCLA fan and the family would watch the games and cheer on their team. In 1974 he met and married Eilene Huffman Hayes and they worked first at the LA Times then their own businesses together. With six children " three boys and three girls our times together were outrageous: Lots of laughter, loud voices and jokes and work, work, work. During the early 80s the Hayes and neighbors Jeanne Dean and Charlie Rowell partnered up to open a beach concession at Salt Creek Beach " the guys left their corporate jobs and the gals kept working during the week and at Salt Creek during the weekends along with all six kids from the Hayes group and Jeannies two; also nephews Tom and Tim Teffeteller and their various friends like Delmar Williams. Ken loved banging his spatula and hollering order up ; during this time the Ritz Carlton was being built at now renamed Laguna Nigel; fun memories are of a time Ken hired a limo to take the whole gang to UCLA game after working in a snack bar on a summer day, all day. Ken wanted the kids to work with himself and Eilene at the business so they could learn his work ethic, how WE do things . He was so proud of son Chris who graduated from Cal Poly with his engineering degree and when they opened the income tax business in Huntington Beach and became The Hayes Associates Chris shared the office for many years. As was the snack bar, the tax business was also a family business and at one time or another the kids were involved. Ken was about rules and honesty and was Irish Catholic . He dearly loved his family but he knew the right way to do things and it was his way . At the Times, he selected Angela Kucia Samstag as his assistant Librarian and her husband Sam was Kens Best Man in 1987, when Ken and Eilene had their marriage blessed here at Ss Simon and Jude, where they attended and were involved. When Ken and Eilene opened The Hayes Associates in Huntington Beach, Dr Jeff Brown was their first client and has continued to this day. He and his lovely wife Maria Hall-Brown invited the Hayes to go to Maui one year for Thanksgiving and returned for the past 10 years; as Ken said for the rest of my natural life, I want to spend Thanksgivings here together and he just returned home 4 days before he passed away suddenly after a great Thanksgiving holiday where Maria organized a surprise birthday 75th party for Ken " he loved it and said I have never been surprised before " so there in the sunset overlooking Napili Bay he got his early party celebration with candles, balloons and cake " his favorite " German Chocolate. Paul and Cathleen Bardon Charlie and Keith Bill and Jan Braun John and Peggy Gallagher and sons Landmark friends and neighbors Ken had a photographic memory and loved intelligence . He was proud of his librarian work and his staff and how he brought computers into Newspaper Library changing it from a morgue of dead facts to an interactive research facility. He was quick and really did not suffered fools gladly . It was a natural transition to income tax preparation business and becoming an Enrolled Agent. He loved reading and learning and never forgot anything he ever read or heard. There was life after corporate and for 20 years the classes, our friends, the clients, the family and work and church were their whole focus. In 2005 Ken decided he was tired " he had recovered from bypass surgery in 1999 and had worked and raised a family and was just wanting to retire. Ken and Eilene took as many trips as possible, Alaska, Ireland, Panama Canal, Cruise around the tip of South America, and of course the annual Thanksgiving Maui trip. He and Eilene sold the tax practice and then at Andrew Stupin of Coastlines request, opened a temporary and private office to wind down their work. That office was closed this summer, and Ken was able to wind up his affairs with Coastline and went to Maui free and clear of big business with only a couple of businesses and tax people to work, Dr Brown is his last client as he was his first, not to mention a beautiful bond of friendship which has lasted many years. Ken had a talent to be a good and true friend and attracted the same. He was a man who loved intelligent women and loved mentoring and working with them;
