George R. Reese

September 6, 1943 — December 5, 2013

George R. Reese, beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, son, pastor, and friend died on December 5, 2013. He was at home, surrounded by his family as well as their prayers, thanks, love, and song. George was born September 6, 1943, the son of James O. and Elizabeth H. Reese, in Melrose Park, Illinois. Music, family, and ministry were his passions in life. He started playing guitar at 8 years old and became an accomplished musician, playing in combos and events all over the Chicago area. He received a double degree in Psychology and Religion from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. He went on to receive his Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. George then served 39 joyful years in ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at three different congregations; as Associate Pastor at Central Christian Church in Kettering, Ohio, then as Senior Pastor at First Christian Church in Wauseon, Ohio, and finally as the founding Pastor of Tylersville Road Christian Church in Mason, Ohio where upon his retirement he was named Pastor Emeritus. His unyielding faith and love in God allowed him to reach beyond those church building walls to affect the lives of countless others through his message of hope, faith, and love for all. His ministry took him to new church starts, church youth camp, Russia, The Holy Land, England, Hawaii and more. George and Cory celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary July 1, 2013. They have three loving children and four grandchildren: Kirsten (Reese) and Gerry Knapp and son Connor, Chris and Stacey Reese and Chris' daughter Adelaide (Addie) Reese and Stacey's son Tomas Hernandez, Katrina Reese and daughter Corynn Bass. He was the brother of Jim Reese and the late Florence Hull, Evelyn Ehlert and Dee Word. His children and their spouses all carry on their father's legacy of caring, working in the field of social work. His grandchildren all carry on his love for music. Since retiring in 2007, George spent time golfing, filling in for vacationing pastors, serving as a docent at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, being in the sunshine as much as possible, travelling with Cory, and spending time with his children and beautiful grandchildren. We will miss his warmth, his caring, his loving touch, his contagious smile, his wealth of wisdom, his gift of song, and his ever-present joy for life. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our hero. But we rejoice, knowing that God used this vessel made of clay to bring countless lives into relationship with Jesus Christ, and this same God was waiting for him with arms open wide. Rest easy in the arms of the Lord, faithful servant. Well done.Memorial Gathering will be at Tylersville Road Christian Church, 6771 Tylersville Road, Mason, OH 45040 on Friday, December 13 from 4-8 PM.
