Adele L. Wasson

July 21, 1939 — November 5, 2023

Adele Louise Wasson (nee Ibold) of Mason, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 5, 2023 at the age of 84.  She was born Friday, July 21, 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio to William Sharman and Louise (nee Stearns) Ibold.

Adele was the proud daughter of two storied Cincinnati families. Her grandfather on her father's side, Peter Ibold, was a tobacconist who, after operating a cigar store in downtown Cincinnati, started the Ibold Cigar Co. The company was a local fixture for decades before Peter sold the company to a relative, Michael Ibold.  Adele's grandfather on her mother's side was a founder of the Stearns & Foster mattress company in Lockland.

Adele grew up in Wyoming where she graduated Wyoming High School as valedictorian and a state Spanish-language champion. During her school years, Adele spent many summers as a counselor at Camp Cheley in Estes Park, Colo., where she was an avid horsewoman and earned Junior NRA honors as a rifle sharpshooter. She often returned to her beloved Estes Park later in life and continued riding horses periodically until her health made that impossible.

After high school, Adele followed in her mother's footsteps to Wells College in New York, where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology.  After graduating, she returned to Wyoming where she assisted in one of the family's other businesses, the Lockland Lumber Co., until her marriage to Richard Wasson. She moved with him to Indianapolis and then to Chicago, where Richard was a deputy and eventually a district chief with the Cook County Sheriff's Department.  Upon Richard's death Adele moved back to Wyoming with their three children, all of whom went on to become fourth generation graduates of Wyoming High School.

Adele was a cat lover and a long-time member of and volunteer for the Cincinnati Zoo, where she donated to the zoo's big-cat programs. She also loved landscaping and working to perfect the yards of her homes in Wyoming and later, Mason.  When not tending to her yard, Adele often could be found in her favorite chair, reading with her rescued cat Eddie in her lap. She also enjoyed needlework and doting upon her only granddaughter, Megan.

Adele was preceded in death by: parents, William and Louise Ibold; and husband, Richard Z. Wasson.

Adele is survived by: sons, Peter (Sarah) Wasson, Michael (Marcia) Wasson, and Richard Wasson; granddaughter, Megan Wasson; her cat, Eddie; and other loving family members and friends.
