Albert John Ochsner, III

January 29, 1938 — September 28, 2024

Lebanon

Albert John Ochsner III, known to his loved ones as John, was born on January 29, 1938 to Albert John Ochsner II MD and Ruth Alexandra Ferguson Ochsner. John attended Episcopal Schools in his younger years and Woodbury Forest where he graduated.

John received his higher education at the University of Virginia, Randolph-Macon College (BS-Biology-1961), Medical College of Virginia (1961-1963) and later attended Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPH-1980), where he honed his skills and knowledge in preparation for his successful career.

John was a Senior Research Associate/Department of Surgery at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center, where he consulted on and conducted medical experimentation on subhuman primates, co-authored 15 publications related to this work and published his own research as well. He was on the Editorial Review Staff of Laboratory Animal Science from 1976-77.

John married Carolyn Iola Conklin in 1962 in Portland, Oregon. They had two children, Elizabeth Ferguson Ochsner and Albert John Ochsner IV. In 1975 they were divorced.

While working at the Primate Center, John met and married (January 29, 1976) the love of his life, Patricia Lee Daly, and continued to work there until 1977 when he entered Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He graduated with an MPH in Clinic and Hospital Administration from Tulane in June 1979 after which he and Pat moved to Yuma, Arizona where he worked as a hospital administrator until 1984. Throughout his accomplished career he worked in a number of hospital and clinic settings from Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and back to Washington until his retirement in 2001.

When living in the Seattle area John and Pat owned a large boat that they kept at a marina on Whidbey Island and used to sail the San Juan Islands, entertaining friends, children and grandchildren with many cruising and fishing adventures.

After Pat retired they traveled extensively and lived in South Carolina, California, Oregon and Texas. Cruising adventures led them all over the world. In their later years they moved to Ohio to be near their daughter Kristine and her husband Scott in the Cincinnati area of Ohio.

John was a kind and thoughtful individual, known for his intelligence and good looks. Standing at an impressive 6’3” tall, he was admired by many. He had a passion for boating, fishing and shooting which brought him much joy and relaxation in his free time. In his earlier years he had a small boat on the Rappahannock River in the Virginia Tidewater area. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. He was also a big soccer and football fan and enjoyed testing himself each evening while watching “Jeopardy” with Pat.

The loss of John leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his family and friends, as well as the medical and scientific communities he contributed to throughout his life.

His final days were spent at the Ohio Hospice where he quietly passed in his sleep on September 28 at the age of 86 years, tended lovingly by his wife Pat and family.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia Daly Ochsner; daughter Elizabeth Ferguson Ochsner, son Albert John IV; stepchildren, Donald Curtis Marble and wife Kristin Elaine Dawson, Kristine Lee Bennett and husband Scott Davis Bennett and Robert Alan Marble and wife Kristin Lynn Summers. And lovingly known as Opa to his 9 grandchildren, Megan Caroline Ochsner Watters, Sophia Elaine Marble, Audrey Leigh Marble, Zachary Dawson Marble, McLean Scott Bennett, Ethan Davis Bennett, Peyton John-Alan Bennett, Joshua Paul Marble and Sarah Kathleen Marble Stathis.

John was preceded in death by his parents Albert John Ochsner II, MD and Ruth Alexandra Ferguson Ochsner Bland.
