Charles Edward Montgomery, M.D.
Today we mourn the loss of Dr. Charles E. ‘Ned’ Montgomery (79). He was born in 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Dorothy and Charles Montgomery, Jr. He had a charming older sister, Claire Montogmery Baus (Richard). Ned’s father Charles came to Philadelphia from Londonderry, Ireland and worked as a treasurer for the John B. Stetson Hat Company in Philadelphia and New York. Ned and Claire grew up in Glenside, PA, and graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1961. Ned excelled in basketball and football and attended Hanover College in Indiana where he played safety for the varsity football team, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry.
A me mber of Phi Delta Theta, Ned met the love of his life, Marilyn Megenhardt, at a pledge event where she stepped on his hamburger and he fell for her spirit and charm. They married in 1965 and remained married for 57 years until he passed away. Ned and Marilyn have two adult children who, along with their spouses, adore them– Mindy Montgomery Patton (Boyd) and Scott Charles Montgomery (Melissa). They have five loving grandchildren: Carter Montgomery Patton (22), Claire Kendall Patton (18), Macy Kendall Montgomery (13), Logan Charles Montgomery (11), and Helen Catherine Montgomery (7). They were Uncle Ned and Aunt Mee to brother Tom Megenhardt’s (Paige) two treasured sons, John Dennis Megenhardt (25) and Peter Kendall Megenhardt (23).
Ned attended Indiana University School of Medicine, graduating in 1969. He completed a one-year internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis before completing a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery in Fort Wayne, IN and a hand surgery fellowship at the Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville, KY. He was board certified in Orthopedic and Hand surgery in 1975. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
He served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed with his family at the Alaskan Air Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage. From 1974-1976 he served as one of two orthopedic surgeons on base and in his free time created an ice skating rink in his backyard and had a brief tenure as a camping enthusiast in an 8 x 8 tent with his family of four.
Ned moved his practice and family to Logansport, Indiana in 1979, where he was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in the city. He built a thriving practice in Logansport and was the team physician for the Logansport High School Berries for many years. During his years in practice, he served as Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Logansport Memorial Hospital. He enjoyed taking care of the community until his retirement in 2011. He gave generously of both time and treasure serving as a Board Member of the First National Bank of Logansport, a Session Member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, a campaign leader at the Cass County YMCA and the United Way, as well as a Sunday School Teacher and Choir Member.
His love of tennis led to realizing his life-long dream of building a court in his front yard and taking his family to Wimbledon. He was a Logansport City Tennis Champion in singles and doubles for many years as well as a founding member of the Hastye Hyll Tennis Club. He found his happy place in Marco Island, Florida, where he and his family and friends enjoyed countless sunsets, boat trips and dinners on the lanai.
Tour Director Montgomery led more than 20 trips to Grand Cayman with dear friends and one trip to the Great Barrier Reef as a Certified SCUBA diver. He merged his love of family with his love of travel and curated multigenerational experiences with his kids and grandkids around the world. He spearheaded orthopedic medical equipment donations as part of an IU mission trip to Kenya and participated in a church mission trip to Petersburg, Alaska.
Ned was a beloved husband, father, grandad and friend. He maintained life-long friendships with his Cheltenham classmates, Phi-Delt fraternity brothers and Logansport tennis and travel partners. As his high school friend shared, “Ned Montgomery has been and always will be the most kind-hearted of Christian gentlemen and a solidly good man.”
Ned served as an example for us in good times and bad, modeling dignity and grace under adversity and living his final years with Parkinson’s Disease to the fullest. We are grateful for his thoughtful team of caregivers.
