Clyde S. King passed away peacefully in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 7, 2023, at the age of 87. Clyde was born on December 21, 1935 in Jamestown, Tennessee (Fentress County) to Henry Roscoe King (1886-1948) and Vallie Ada King (1896-1944). Clyde was the youngest of six children and miraculously survived polio when he contracted the virus around age 5. After the passing of Clyde's mother in 1944, he and his father lived for some time near Baltimore in Essex, Maryland with his two older sisters. Afterwards, Clyde and his father moved back to Jamestown, Tennessee; however, his father soon fell ill with cancer and passed in 1948. Without parents at age 12, Clyde's older sister Antha (Anth-ee) and her husband Johnny Stephens took him in. When not going to Alvin C. York High School, Clyde worked with Johnny cutting timber and he eventually found work with the Forest Service in Pickett County, Tennessee. The work generally consisted of cutting timber, digging trenches with bulldozers to fight forest fires and occasionally staying in lookout towers to help spot fires.
In 1955, Clyde began traveling to Ohio in search of better pay and a better life. After a few attempts in Dayton and Cincinnati, Clyde was offered a job at U.S. Printing in Norwood, Ohio, and he worked his entire career there as a pressman from 1956 to 1988. It was at U.S. Printing that a much older pressman, Anthony (Sid) Burke took an interest in Clyde and encouraged him to start playing golf and invited him to join his golf group. Clyde played his first round of golf in 1959 at Reeves Golf Course in Cincinnati and he played nearly every week from that point on until a few years of his passing. Golf was his passion and a constant thread throughout his life. Up until the time of Clyde's passing, he watched nearly every round of every tournament on the PGA tour on tv with his wife, Eudell.
Clyde met his wife, Eudell Lakes, in Norwood, Ohio, and married on May 4, 1957. Soon after marrying, Clyde was drafted into the Army and after completing Basic Training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, he was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama until his honorable discharge in June of 1959. Together, Clyde and Eudell had two children, Sherry and Tim. They lived and raised both their children in Norwood, Ohio, and later moved to Mason, Ohio, after both retiring. Clyde and Eudell loved the Smoky Mountains and visited every year for over 60 years. Clyde also loved baseball and coached his son Tim's knothole teams in the 70s and 80s. Clyde loved his family and his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them every chance he had. Clyde was a true original with his sense of humor and always made friends wherever he went, whether it was at the golf course or playing poker at the Mason community center.
Clyde often attributed his longevity to the love of his wife, Eudell. Together, they celebrated over 66 years of marriage and set the template for what an enduring relationship should look like, especially in their later years. There will never be another Clyde and he will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him and love him.
