Douglas Harrison Tallmadge , 92, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away January 4, 2024.
Born to Donald H. Tallmadge and Mildred M. Wuest in Brooklyn New York, July 13, 1931, Doug spent his early years in Queens, NY where he had his first jobs running paper routes and delivering milk during the Great Depression. In 1941, the family moved to South Florida where Doug resided for the next 70 years. He graduated from Miami Senior High School in the fall of 1950 where he was a member of the photography club and began a lifelong passion for bowling.
After high school, Doug attended the University of Miami while working anywhere from two to three jobs at the same time. Doug joined the United States Navy in 1952, completing specialized Naval electronics & aviation training and serving on the USS Coral Sea. During his 4 years in the Navy, Doug developed many of his most defining lifelong passions: engineering, bowling, cards, skating, and travel.
After the Navy, Doug joined Pratt & Whitney’s newly opened Research and Development Center near West Palm Beach Florida in 1958 where he worked in the development and testing of rocket and jet engines for space and military applications. Doug’s professional work spanned analog to digital electronics, systems controls, and data collection. He retired as a senior engineer from Pratt & Whitney with 34 years of service in 1992.
Doug married Sharon Russell in 1960 and together they deepened their faith growing and supporting their family for 48 years until Sharon’s passing in 2008. Doug and Sharon were active in their faith communities, serving in numerous parish, deanery and diocesan ministries while worshiping at St. Andrew’s, Lake Worth Beach (FL), Church of the Guardian Angels, Lantana (FL), Holy Comforter, Crescent City (FL) and St. Anne Episcopal Church, West Chester (OH).
An avid bowler, Doug bowled in Pratt & Whitney and community scratch and handicap leagues. Notably, Doug was Florida State Bowling Singles Champion in 1959.
In their retirement, Doug and Sharon explored 49 states and Canada in various trailer homes and RVs, visiting nearly every notable national park along the way.
Doug had an exceptionally active retirement, volunteering, playing golf, and dancing. Doug joined his bother Ron in Masonic service across south Florida and at his area lodges (PM) and with the Scottish Rite (32° KCCH). In later years Doug and Sharon split their time between family and friends in Cincinnati, Ohio and warmer winters in Crescent City, Florida.
Doug is survived by his sister, Gloria Townsend of Miami, Florida, sister-in-law Peggie Tallmadge of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, son Daniel Tallmadge (Margaret) of Cincinnati, Ohio, grandson, Douglas Tallmadge II of Seattle, Washington and many nieces and nephews. Doug’s surviving extended family includes Sharon McAliley, David Hall, Keith McAliley, Stacey Harter, Benjamin Neikes, Amanda Hall & Andrew Hall.
He is preceded in death by his wife Sharon, brother Ronald (Jeanne) of Plantation, Florida and Kenneth Tallmadge of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 15th, 2024, at St. Anne Episcopal Church, 6461 Tylersville Road, West Chester, OH with reception following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to St. Anne Episcopal Church, West Chester, OH or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Lake Worth Beach, FL.
