Edward J. Kubrin, Jr.

April 17, 1954 — July 2, 2021

Edward (Ed) Joseph Kubrin, age 67, passed away peacefully in West Chester on Friday, July 2, 2021. He was born April 17, 1954 in Youngstown, Ohio to Edward and Mary (Hess) Kubrin. He married Carole A. Hovis of Girard, Ohio on June 23, 1979, and together they had two wonderful daughters and celebrated 37 years together before Carole passed in 2016. He graduated from Youngstown State University in 1976 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He specialized in structural, environmental, and geotechnical engineering for 30 years and retired from Jacobs Engineering as a Principal Civil Engineer.

Ed was a resilient survivor through numerous hardships, including losing most of his hearing in 1992 but regaining it with two cochlear implants in 2010 to enjoy his favorite music and movies again.  Always a music fan with a wide range of favorites, he enjoyed The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, and Elvis Costello, and in his opinion, a movie was good if it had no morally redeeming value. He lived by his mantra, “a good sense of humor can get you through a whole mess of ugly,” and so he was always prepared with a funny joke or entertaining story to tell. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, and rooting (usually hopelessly) for any Cleveland sports team.

He is survived by his daughters Lauren (Brad) Sheets of Liberty Township and Tricia (Tom Tedone) of Alexandria, Virginia; grandchildren Kate and Nick Sheets; and sisters Kathy (Bert) Brychta of Little Falls, New Jersey and Patty Ormond of Austin, Texas.

In lieu of a funeral, memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 4 at Sonder Brewing, 8584 Duke Boulevard in Mason for those who wish to raise a glass in Ed’s memory. Further details will be confirmed closer to the date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ed’s name to Compass Christian Church, 6771 Tylersville Road, Mason, Ohio 45040.
