Ernie Merle Payne, of Buford, Georgia (formerly of Maineville and Fairfield, Ohio), passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 81 years old. Born on June 4, 1943, in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the beloved son of Ralph and Dorothy (Blankenship) Payne.
A proud United States Marine, Ernie honorably served his country. He carried that same dedication and pride throughout his life, especially as an avid fan of THE Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ernie built a long and fulfilling career, beginning at Coca-Cola in Hamilton, Ohio, as a driver’s helper. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced to become branch manager before eventually transferring to Cincinnati. He later joined Ohio Valley Wine, where he made lasting friendships and retired in 2010.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Monica (Ron) Best, Rhonda (Wayne) Brandenburg, and Kristi (Billy) Payne; his cherished grandchildren, Morgan Hall, Skylar Bledsoe, Bailey Payne, Mikah Alfaro, Kendall Nesmith, Roman Best, Kaiser Hurst, and Merrick Cox; and his adored great-grandchildren, Emeri Hamilton, Julian and Aria Bledsoe, and Odellia Alfaro. He also leaves behind his brothers, Roy and Chuck, and sisters, Mary, Ruth, Connie, and Juanita, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sandra (Stull) Payne; the mother of his children, Karen Louise (Lent) Payne; brothers, Dave and Gordon; and sisters, Ada, Edith, and Charlene.
Private services were held by the family, and Ernie was laid to rest with military honors at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery, Ohio, in recognition of his service to his country.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to a charitable organization of your choice in Ernie’s memory.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the caring staff at Oaks at Hampton, whose unwavering love, exceptional care, and heartfelt compassion made a profound difference in our dad's final days. We are also sincerely thankful to the devoted team at Caritas Hospice Care for their kindness and support during this difficult time.
His legacy of love, support, and loyalty to his family and friends will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
