Frances “Pauline” Bailey, age 98, of Lebanon, Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2020 at the Otterbein Retirement Community in Lebanon with her daughter (Alice) at her side.
Pauline was the first child of Henry and Julia (Holmes) Pendell. She was delivered at home by her father on April 18, 1921 in Wilmington.
Pauline spent most of her life in Southwest Ohio. She was a war bride who married the love of her life, Frederick “Gene” Long, in 1943. He was an Air Force Pilot in Europe during WWII. Pauline gave birth to their daughter, Alice, while Gene was overseas. After Gene’s early death in 1973, Pauline worked at the Dayton Veterans Administration as an Executive Secretary. In 1978, she received the “Secretary of the Year Award.”
Pauline’s life was devoted to her family, church, and volunteer work. She took special joy using FaceTime to communicate in sign language with her Deaf son, David. Pauline’s early volunteer work centered on helping children with disabilities learn to swim. Giving her time, love, and support to others continued throughout her life. Over the past 15 years, she was a regular volunteer in the Otterbein church office and enjoyed a close friendship with the church secretary, Teresa Greer. She also assisted with the hospice program. In addition, friends will remember that she enjoyed playing cards and painting. Years ago, Pauline helped David participate in a sign language choir when they lived in San Antonio. She was always proud of her children and celebrated their accomplishments. She was very kind and loving to all and will be dearly missed.
Pauline is survived by her children Greg (Lori Nelson) Long of Geneva, IL, David Long of Jacksonville, IL, and Alice Woodward of Lebanon; grandchildren Tony (Melissa) Woodward and Andy (Michelle) Woodward; great-grandchildren Zachary (Danielle), Joshua, Rebekah, Michael, Rachel, Esther, Sarah, Abbey, AJ Woodward; great-great grandchild Maisie Woodward, niece Lin Carlson; nephews John Schubert, Dan Schubert, Rob Schubert; and many other dear relatives and friends.
