Gary "MOOSE" Elam

March 14, 1948 — March 16, 2025

Middletown

Gary "Moose" Elam, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed peacefully on March 16, 2025, in Middletown, Ohio, just two days after celebrating his 77th birthday. Born on March 14, 1948, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Gary lived a life defined by love, family, and unwavering faith.

Raised in the scenic Breathitt County, Kentucky, by his devoted grandparents, Leburn and Nazzie Allen, Gary's early years were filled with precious memories and foundational life lessons. His childhood included a passion for basketball, where he proudly represented Breathitt County High School on the court.

For 33 and a half years, Gary dedicated himself to his work as a shipping clerk at Middletown Paper Board, embodying a spirit of commitment and hard work that served as an example to many. After retiring, Gary enjoyed the simpler pleasures of life, nurturing his hobbies that included watching Western movies, golfing, indulging in anything related to UK Basketball, and reading, especially the Bible which he held close to his heart.  Gary was a member of Deliverance Tabernacle in Middletown, Ohio.

Gary, often described as the "Gentle Giant," was known for his ability to easily make new friends and his generous nature. He was the type of grandpa who would engage in silly antics with his grandchildren, creating laughter and joy in their lives. He had a spirited connection with his family, always being the first to lend a hand or offer support, famously known to give anyone the shirt off his back. His UK pajamas and Bible were perhaps the most fitting symbols of the kind of man he was—devout, proud, and unpretentious.

Gary's love for his family was immeasurable and unwavering. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie (nee Allen) Elam, their children, Cindy (Scott) Ferguson and Jennifer (Carmine) Carder, his beloved grandchildren who include Chastity (Dan) Mitchell, Kaitlin (Jonathon) Rice, Nick (Emily) Ebbing, Austin (Brittany) Ferguson, Courtney (Kody) Gustin, and Hope (Michael) Stidham, along with twenty great-grandchildren whose lives were enriched by his presence. He also leaves behind his dear sisters, Mary Jett and Josephine Collins, and his beloved dog, Beau, who was always by his side.

Gary was predeceased by his mother, Luna Allen, as well as siblings Grover Allen, Alice Lansaw, Lula Allen, and Georgia Case, who will greet him with open arms in the eternal embrace of family.

His legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. Visitation will be held on March 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on March 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Zornes officiating, both at Mueller Hicks Funeral Home & Crematory in Middletown, Ohio.

Gary "Moose" Elam will be missed deeply, yet his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
