It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George J. Benhase Jr., a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who departed this life on January 5, 2025, at the age of 89. George was born on May 31, 1935, to George J. Benhase and Dolores (nee Anderson) in Norwood, Ohio,
George leaves behind a remarkable legacy, survived by his children: Michael (Ronda), Daniel (Donna), and Kathleen (James) Lotz, his grandchildren: Christine (Andrew), Katie (Adam), Michael (Alayne), Angela (Don), Julianne (Christopher), Jen (Bryan), Jeffery (Melissa), and Brian (Karen), and great-grandchildren: Alden, Marcus, Austin, Tanner, Emerson, Theodore, Vivian, Leo, Tessa, Adelaide, Maeve, Madeline, Samuel, Ada, and Eustace. He is also survived by his sister Karen Stoltze, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members,
Though he grieved the loss of his beloved wife, Janet, and his dear siblings, Marilyn and Janice, the memories they forged together remain a lasting treasure in the hearts of those who loved him.
George was born and raised in Norwood and is a proud graduate of Purcell High School. After their marriage, George and Janet were one of the first families to make West Chester their home – where they lived for 70 years. George was named “Citizen of the Year” by the West Chester Jaycee’s in 1976 for his work with the Pisgah Youth Organization and the Township Park Board. George also served as a Navy Reservist.
George was a loving family man and dedicated his life caring for his family, friends and community. He tremendously enjoyed his lake house in Burt Lake, Michigan, where he and Jan spent their summers as members of the Indian River Golf Club, boating and socializing with their many friends and family members. It was the time he spent with his family—sharing stories, laughter, and life experiences - that brought him the greatest joy.
George enjoyed a distinguished 36- year career at General Electric Aircraft Engine Group where he rose from a draftsman to an aircraft engine systems engineer. He was awarded several patents and awards for his work.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate George's life on Friday, January 10, 2025, at St. Susanna Catholic Church, located at 616 Reading Road, Mason, OH 45040. Visitation at the church will be at 10 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
