Ba Cao Thi Hai, peacefully passed away at 8:30AM on Monday, October 11, 2021 at UC West Chester Hospital. Born to Ong Cao Van Dao and Ba Nguyen Thi Cong on February 15,1937 in Di An Vietnam.
Buddah name: Than Tuong
Ba Cao Thi Hai was an extremely strong, independent, loving, and brave woman. She sought refuge in America in 1984 from the Vietnam War. She was amongst the first Vietnamese peoples with con lai to immigrate to Cincinnati, OH. She arrived with little money, no English language background, no family nor friends with her youngest daughter Hong Tran. She endured the saddest and scariest times but was a survivor. She knew that she had to do everything in her power to provide for her daughter and kids/family back home in Vietnam.
She secured a career with Regency Hyatt Hotels where she worked tirelessly to provide for her family and build a life in America. During these years, there were more and more Vietnamese immigrants who fled to safety and opportunity in America. Despite her busy schedule when she received news that new Vietnamese immigrants were arriving in Cincinnati, she would meet them at the airport and bring them a welcome kit filled with things from back home such as bags of rice grain, nuoc mam, etc. and provided them with transportation.
Many of these immigrants would arrive anxious with no family to greet them, but she welcomed them with open arms and provided a safe haven. There were also young bachelor men in their 20s that served in the Vietnam War that sought refuge in Cincinnati with no family of their own. She provided them security, guidance and mothered them. They became her children. Ba Cao Thi Hai was known to be of the Buddhism faith; however the community of Buddhists was small at that time so for a number of years she was heavily involved with volunteering for the Vietnamese Catholic Community.
In Cincinnati, OH there are dozens of people that call Ba Cao Thi Hai their mother, their aunt, and their grandmother. She was that to all. If you were ever in need you knew that you could depend on her. What she enjoyed most was being surrounded by her family, friends and her many kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren both biological and non-biological. She could throw back beers with the best of them and drink anybody younger than her under the table. Her weekends were filled with laughter, cooking, and drinking and that is what made her the happiest. She was making best eggrolls ever.
The Vietnamese Community in Cincinnati grew over the years so did the population of Vietnamese Buddhist and temples. During her later years in life she was very involved in the Buddhist Community in Cincinnati, OH. She was a woman of the highest character.
