We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mrs. Iqbal A. Nawaz (nee Khawaja) on April 20th, 2021 at the age of 91. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by family. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Sara Nawaz of Cincinnati and her son, Salman Nawaz of Irvine, California as well as multiple beloved extended family, including that of long-time friends.
Mrs Nawaz will always be remembered for her quick wit, sharp mind and curiosity of the world. She made every moment count with an unparalleled zest for life. Her warmth and generosity of spirit will be greatly missed by her many friends.
She blazed a path for women in Pakistan, becoming the first trained librarian in the country. With a scholarship to Indiana University, she received Masters degrees in both Library Science and Geography. Strongly believing in the development of curiosity in young minds, she also wrote several childrens books on geography. She and her late husband, Dr. Muhammad Nawaz, were an integral part of the Institute of Education and Research at the University of Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Continuing as a librarian in the US, she enjoyed work at the University of West Alabama library and at both the Main Campus and Health Sciences libraries at the University of Cincinnati. A lifelong learner herself, she was constantly exploring through travel, researching and welcoming people of all walks of life.
Mueller Funeral Home is graciously helping with the arrangements. Burial will be Wednesday, April 21st at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to the University of Cincinnati Foundation in honor of Iqbal A. Nawaz.
