James Edward Fenton, known affectionately as "Big Jim" and remembered fondly as "Red" in his youth due to his vibrant red hair, passed away on January 3, 2025. He was born on June 28, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After earning a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the University of Akron, Jim served in the U.S. Army before beginning his career at Goodyear Tire. It was during his time at the university that he met the love of his life, Ginger Durbin. Their bond lasted over 60 years until her passing.
A star athlete, Jim played basketball and baseball in college and was an inductee into Halls of Fame for the University of Akron, Summit County, and Greater Akron Baseball. His legacy in basketball was further cemented when his University of Akron jersey number 44 was retired.
Following his tenure at Goodyear, Jim transitioned to homebuilding for Ryan Homes, Crest Communities, and Williamsburg Properties, where he excelled in sales before advancing to positions in management. After retiring, he embraced a new role at Beckett Ridge Country Club, where his love for golf flourished. Jim was also active in the American Legion.
Jim is survived by his sons, Jim (Ruth) Fenton and Kevin (Sheila) Fenton, as well as his beloved grandchildren: Erin (Alexis Pereira) Fenton, Megan (Ryan) Lee, Abby Fenton, Ryan Fenton, Katie Fenton, Johnny Fenton, Tommy Fenton, and Joey Fenton. He was also a great-grandfather to Teo Pereira, Logan Lee, and Dylan Lee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph P. Fenton and Adele (nee Neville) Fenton, his devoted wife Ginger Fenton, and brothers Kevin Fenton and Patrick "Mickey" Fenton.
