James F. (Jim) Hughes, an architect and dedicated family man, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on June 16, 1937, James left a mark on both his profession and the lives of those who knew him.
James served his country as a member of the United States Army before embarking on a successful career as an independent architect. His designs for buildings of all types--including restaurants, churches, and private homes reflect his professional skills and passion for functional design.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, James was a man of artistic and athletic interests. His architectural background enhanced his hobbies of drawing and painting. Other passions included reading, especially mysteries, and pursuing his other passion, golf. He spent many afternoons at various Pittsburgh golf courses or hitting golf balls with friends and family in the backyard, giving friendly pointers on the sport. James also held a lifelong special place in his heart for the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed his time watching every game.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jean (nee Lodi) Hughes; loving daughter, Cara (Greg) Hasselbeck; and treasured granddaughter, Lauren Hasselbeck. He is also survived by his sister Jane Ann Byrnes. His many nieces, nephews, and friends remember him as a great conversationalist with a ready wit.
James was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret (nee Martin) Hughes, and his brother, Bill Hughes.
As we celebrate Jim’s life, we remember a strong, passionate man, who never lost his optimism for what is to come.
