Joan Opatken

Joan Opatken (nee Paterra), 92, passed peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at home.

Joan was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania on July 14, 1928 to John and Norma (nee Costatine) Paterra. She graduated from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy in 1950 and worked as a pharmacist most of her life. Anyone who knew Joan recognized her as a woman whose great faith formed and sustained her throughout her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family, playing the piano, and solving word puzzles.

Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, Edward, and her daughter, Mary Frances Gregory.

Joan is survived by her children, Clifford (Emily) Opatken, Linda (Tom) Rhein, Edward (Leisha) Opatken Jr., Therese (David) Foley, Susan (David) Danforth; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Cecelia Vitale.

Visitation will be Friday, December 4, 2020 from 10:00 am until the Mass of Christian Burial Service at 10:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9080 Cincinnati Dayton Road, West Chester, Ohio 45069. Interment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
