John Bernard Augustin, Jr., of Mason, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2019 in Montgomery, Ohio. The oldest son of seven children, he was born Wednesday, April 14, 1943 in Portsmouth, Ohio to John Bernard, Sr. and Grace Eileen (nee Phelps) Augustin.
Earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton, John was proud to be a Flyer. For years, he held season tickets for basketball. A degree was not the only thing he got out of his college education. After four years of dating, he finally tied the knot to his best friend, Joanne Mary Halpin. Saturday, September 18, 1965, the two were married in Precious Blood Catholic Church, Dayton, OH with the reception following at Corpus Christi Recreation Center, and so began their life filled with love, laughter and blessings.
John worked hard and loved what he did. Combining his gift of gab with his savvy technical skills, he excelled at computer software sales. The Wall Street Journal was delivered daily to his home and if he was traveling, he always read the electronic version.
With a heartwarming smile, John loved life. John enjoyed boating and always looked forward to the family houseboating adventures on Lake Cumberland. As an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, if he wasn't at the game, John enjoyed listening to the game with his transistor radio on his deck while drinking a glass of his “white water.”
Born with a green thumb, John could grow just about anything. His roses were amazing in color and size, but he was mostly proud of his tomatoes and peppers that he would use in his chili. John looked forward to his yearly trips with his "Hog Heaven" team of friends to compete in Memphis in May, a World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest. John even had a cookbook known as Augie’s Eclectic & Ever-Growing Recipe Collection, always giving credit to the appropriate people for the recipes.
John will be forever cherished and loved by all who knew him. He loved spending his time watching his grandchildren in sports, theater, concerts and numerous other activities. They were his world.
John was preceded in death by: parents, John and Eileen Augustin, Sr.; brothers, Joe Augustin and James Augustin; and a grandson, Noah Asbeck.
John is survived by: his loving friend, companion and wife of 54 years, Joanne Augustin; son, John B. (Rhonda) Augustin, III; identical twin daughters, Jennifer (Kent) McKenzie and Julie (Chris) Asbeck; grandchildren who affectionately called John "Poppie", Isabelle Augustin, Jack Augustin, Megan McKenzie, Mitch McKenzie, Sam Asbeck and Nicholas Asbeck; sisters, Jane (Dennis) Busch and Judy (Bill) Shannon; brothers, Jerry Augustin and Jeff Augustin; and a host of loving family members and friends.
