John L. Stein

John L. Stein , 87, died early Saturday morning, October 12, 2019, at the Barrington in West
Chester, Ohio. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio on February 26, 1932 to John L. Stein, Sr. and Ina
(Anderson) Stein.

He was an avid and voracious reader, history buff, lover of classical music, and amateur
craftsman, often spending his time handcrafting wooden toys and furniture for church bazaars,
especially Trinity United Methodists in Milford, Ohio. He resided in Milford with his late wife
Jani more than 25 years. He loved cats and tending his flower garden at the Milford house,
which was the pride of the neighborhood. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1950,
then later served his country in the air force during the Korean War (1952-59). He then
attended Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, where he received a bachelors degree in
electrical engineering, also in 1959. He used this training at the Baldwin Piano Company in
Cincinnati, OH, which hired him right out of college to help implement their electric organ and
piano offerings, helping to make Liberaces blue fiberglass piano happen and also helping to
install the first Electric Grand piano at the Tanglewood Shed in the Berkshires, both during
the 1970s. He retired from Recto Molded Products in Oakley in the early 2000s.

He is survived by his daughters Stephanie L. Martin (Reid) of West Chester and Lisa K. Haven
(Mark) of Zanesville, stepdaughter Shari McCann (Kevin) of Gaithersburg, MD and stepson Jeff
Wallace (Leslie) of Columbus. Surviving grandchildren include Nina and Travis Martin, Ryan and
Christian McCann, Vincent, Treyton and Camron Wallace.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Janalene (Powell) Stein, whom
he married on November 14, 1981 and who died on June 14, 2009.


Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service graveside is planned in late October
at the Dayton National Cemetery with full military honors.
