Josef Koehl , age 92, formerly of Racine, WI, passed away peacefully May 15, 2019 at Christian Village at Mason, OH. He was born June 5, 1926 in India, Yugoslavia to Josef and Agatha (nee Schneider) Koehl.
As a young man, Josef enjoyed painting and drawing. His mother lined the walls of their home with his masterpieces. Before his passage to America, Josef was an apprentice on the railroads learning the many mechanical aspects and even had the privilege to engineer a train. His voyage to America was by sea. Josef was thankful he did not experience motion sickness as he was able to tend to the other passengers.
Josef built a home for his wife and was often found tending his 2+ acres, planting over 100 evergreens, maples and annuals, earning the title of "Joe's National Park". He was a man of many talents, challenging himself by constantly tinkering, looking to make things better. His family will forever remember the lift he made using a garage door opener that would carry items up the basement stairs.
With an enormous heart, family was first for Josef. His grandsons referred to him as "Opa" and enjoyed a very special relationship with him. Stray cats also benefitted from this warm heart as Josef could never turn one away. There was always food, water and a dry place to sleep for these wandering lives.
Josef will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
