Leo D Gray

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Leo D. Gray, on March 8, 2025, at the age of 89. In his last days, Leo was surrounded by the love of his family. He left behind a legacy defined by friendliness, a strong work ethic, community service and commitment to family.

He was born in Wichita, Kansas, on December 4, 1935, to Leo and Marguerite (nee Dale) Gray. He attended Salina High School in Salina, Kansas. In his early years, Leo enjoyed wrestling, track, swimming and tennis. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Kansas State University.

In 1961 he was recalled by the Army because of the Berlin Crisis and was sent to Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. While there he met the love of his life. Leo was a loving husband to Verlaine (nee Heitzer) for an incredible 62 years. Together, they cultivated a rich family life, raising two cherished daughters, Denise (Kim) Gray and Pam (Terry) Fazenbaker. He took immense pride in being a grandfather to Maryellen (Rob) Fazenbaker and Ashley (Cameron) Lee, as well as a loving great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren: Aliyah, Myah, Cameron Jr. (CJ), Carter, and Stella. His sister Patricia (the late John) Gallagher, Sister-In-Law Susan (the late Tom) Heitzer, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many friends who also hold dear memories of his love and guidance.

In his professional life, Leo worked in Sales for Best Foods, finally going into business for himself and was well-respected as the owner of Action Brokerage, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his craft. He and Verlaine worked well together in the business. Leo served as president of the Brokers Association. He also served on several community board of directors. He was elected for two terms for the Republican Central Committee and served on the board of the local Tea Party.

Beyond business, he found joy in nurturing life’s beauty as an avid gardener. He especially enjoyed growing over 150 dahlia’s every year and served as vice president of the Cincinnati Dahlia Association for many years. Some of the family-oriented activities were camping, boating, and extended family gatherings.

Leo & Verlaine were very active in their most cherished Young at Heart Senior Group at St. Max and felt as though the members were their extended family. They enjoyed being active with interesting meetings, dinners out and field trips. They coordinated week long bus trips for many years as their contribution to the group. Leo was so thankful for their friendships and prayers throughout his illness!!!

The absence of Leo D. Gray will surely be felt by all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy is a testament to the power of love, community, and commitment to family.

Friends and family are invited to honor Leo's life during visitation on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM at St. Maximilian Kolbe, located at 5720 Hamilton Mason Rd., Liberty Twp, OH 45011. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 AM, with a celebratory lunch immediately after mass. Leo will then be laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery following the luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice in Leo's honor, celebrating the generosity he embodied throughout his life.
