June 6, 1928 — March 11, 2021

LUCY D’SOUZA

Born June 6, 1928, Mangalore, India. Died March 11, 2021, Middletown, Ohio, at age 92.

Married in Valencia, in the city of Mangalore, India on October 27, 1945 to John Mathew D’Souza, who passed away in Mangalore on July 6, 1970 at the age of 59.

Lucy made raising and nurturing her five children the center of her life. She was beautiful, intelligent, eloquent, meticulous, organized, cheerful and humble. She had a photographic memory, a passion for letter writing and a kind heart.

Lucy evolved into the family matriarch, sharing her indomitable spirit, religious faith, genuine warmth, hospitality, advice and incredible cooking skills with her children and their spouses, and her grandchildren. Her children came to understand their Mom had a special connection with God – her devout prayers were often answered miraculously.

Lucy left her family and friends a legacy of values that are a treasure trove:

  • Always trust in God
  • Work hard and smart and believe you can achieve anything
  • Recognize right from wrong
  • Be kind, compassionate and generous
  • Cook up a storm and share your secret recipes
  • Offer a smile and make everybody feel welcomed to a home-cooked meal
  • Hug, kiss, laugh, say I love you, forgive and ask for forgiveness, and live each day to your fullest

Lucy is survived by a large and loving family:

Five children : Terry, Tina (Alwyn), Doreen (Wayne Schowalter), Colin (Joy), and Freda.

Thirteen grandchildren :  Sharon D’Souza (Bob Finlay), Ryan (Mara) D’Souza,

Ben (Erin) Colaco, Annie D’Souza (Afsheen Foroozan), Jeannie (Craig) Vore, Amber D’Souza (Dan Gans), Jordan D’Souza, Sean Counceller, Trevor Counceller, Marissa Counceller (Josh Gammon), Hannah D’Souza, Caleb (Kayla) Schowalter, and Rachel Schowalter.

Nine great-grandchildren : Graham Finlay, Natalia D’Souza, William Finlay, Alec Finlay, Addie Vore, Ellie Vore, Nilou Foroozan, Dylan Gammon, and Noah Gans.
