UNITED STATES ARMY VETERAN
Michael J. 'Mike' Bennett, 49, of West Chester, OH passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 20, 2020. Formerly of Louisville, KY and born in Johnstown, PA to parents Betty (nee Domenick) and Weldon ‘Pete’ Bennett.
Mike was patriotic, hardworking and a lover of sports. He took care of and loved his family. He served as an Infantry Officer in the US Army from 8-1992 until 5-2001. He was well respected and thankful for the honor to serve his country. Mike worked at General Electric for 23 years following the service. At GE he was part of the Veteran's Network helping veterans' transition to civilian life. If you knew Mike, you knew his passion for football. He was a youth football coach for over 10 years in Louisville where he provided insight on sports, but more importantly on life and was a mentor to many kids through the years. Mike's love of sports flowed into his family. He coached his son to several football championships and coached his daughter to a field hockey championship. He also enjoyed watching her play soccer. Growing up in Johnstown, PA and being a Penn State football player and alumni, Mike was an avid Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Mike, however, had a softer side and had a great love for animals. He planned to volunteer at the Humane Society at some point after retirement. He will be greatly missed.
Mike was the beloved husband of Kimberly (nee Hewitt) for over 27 years, devoted father of Nick (Allie) Bennett and Morgan Bennett, dearest son of Betty and the late Pete Bennett and son-in-law of Polly and Tom Hewitt. Mike reconnected with his biological father Steven (Effie) Schlicher and sister Jessi Schlicher 20 years ago.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, a private family service will be held on Friday, April 24th at the Mueller Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Mike's Life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to FoldsofHonor.org/donate . Their mission is to provide educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service-members. Honor their sacrifice; educate their legacy.
