Live Stream Service for Richard Eckes
Richard Charles Eckes, 73, of West Chester, passed away on July 15, 2023. Born to George and Evelyn (nee Flach) Eckes on October 19, 1949, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Rich was the definition of a family man, driving across the city for every dog show, practicing soccer until dark, throwing kids countless times in the swimming pool and always ready to jump in to fix a car or re-build a go kart. He was dependable, supportive, and loving. He enjoyed spending time at home with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren.
An often quiet man with a personality that could liven up any situation, Rich was always the first to crack a joke to break the ice or ease the tension, and despite a distaste for crowds he rarely knew a stranger and was always quick with a handshake or a hug. He had an uncanny ability to make any child feel right at home with him, and there wasn’t a thing in the world he wouldn’t do to make his grandchildren happy.
Many days Rich could be found sitting on his back porch embracing the sunshine, listening to his radio, or simply staring at his backyard tree line. He enjoyed animals, including the many pets he had over the years, the wildlife in his yard - deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and anything else that happened to wander in.
Rich was very proud of his service in the Navy. He was a Vietnam veteran and there was rarely a time he wouldn’t be willing to tell you a story that somehow wrapped you up in it as if you were there yourself. He was also incredibly proud of his long career at the Bulk Mail Center postal facility as a maintenance engineering specialist. He loved to say no one knew that postal building better than he because he had been a part of it from the time it opened to the day he retired in May 2011.
He could fix anything, at work or at home, and he was always the first one on everybody’s list when it came time for a home improvement project or a repair job. One of his famous catch lines was “I can fix anything but a broken heart”. His collection of tools was impressive, and could only be outshined by his ability to use them to make the world around him a better place. He spent much of his time in retirement working on his clock collection and his scooter.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents, George and Evelyn Eckes, his beloved grandson, Connor Logsdon, brother-in-law, JR Mann, his aunt, Norma Conroy, in-laws Charles and Mary Helen Frey and sister-in-law,Mary Jo Majewski.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Peggy (nee Frey) Eckes, two children, Nikki (Josh) Logsdon, Richard “Scooter” (Beth) Eckes, and his “other” son, Jamie (Kristine) Hull, grandchildren Cora Eckes, Elliot Logsdon, Lucy Eckes, and Sloane Logsdon, siblings George (Lavonne) Eckes, Elaine Mann, Rosemary (Will) Gates, Paul (Kathy) Eckes, Ray Eckes, Martha Eckes, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 24th from 4:00-5:00 pm, with a memorial service to follow at 5:00pm, all at Mueller Funeral Home, 6791 Tylersville Road, Mason Ohio 45040. Please dress casually, as that is how Rich would have preferred it. Purple was his favorite color and his family plans to celebrate him by wearing it and welcome you to do the same.
A private celebration of life with bites to eat and a cold beer toast to Rich will follow the service from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Common Beer Company, 126 E Main St Mason. Ohio 45040. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Charge for Connor organization. It’s no secret that Rich and Connor shared a special connection and this organization was very close to Rich’s heart. He always requested donations be made in his name rather than giving him a gift so we know this occasion would be no different. https://www.chargeforconnor.org/product/donation/
