Robert (Bob) “Buck” Hangbers 9/1/1947 – 10/26/2023
Robert (Bob) “Buck” Hangbers, 76 of Mason, Ohio passed away unexpectedly in his home on October 26, 2023. Born to Robert and Norma (nee Horner) Hangbers on September 1, 1947, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Loving husband of 53 wonderful years to Karen Hangbers (Elfers); proud father to daughters Tracy (Matthew) Berse and Tara (Peter) Sears.
Bob was a graduate of Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High School’s class of 1965 and attended Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati before he secured a long, successful 32-year career at Procter & Gamble. During his years at P&G he was most proud of his collaboration on projects for Pringles packaging innovations. His dedication and tenure allowed him to improve formulation, packaging, and quality around the world. This geographical impact and success allowed him to travel to many different countries. It was the highlight of his career.
After he retired from Procter & Gamble, he used his continuing education benefit to obtain his USGTF certification and become a Certified Golf Teaching Professional. He was hired as a part-time “Starter” for The Kings Island Golf Center and worked there up until his death. He organized the annual Hilton Head Island Golf Tour that included upwards of 30 of his closest friends and family that joined in this memorable, annual tradition. He would spend hours planning, analyzing scores, providing statistics (year-to-date), awards ceremony, and stories to last a lifetime. The tour finally came to an end after 30 years. He also got to play at Pebble Beach with his wife and checked that off his bucket “Buck” list. Another “Buck” list box he checked was his hole in one at the Elks Golf Club. He also competed in the World Amateur Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC. He loved University of Cincinnati Bearcat football and was a season ticket holder. Lastly and most importantly what everyone loved most was his quick wit. When he entered the room, he immediately had everyone laughing, ALL his jokes, fun facts, stories, impressions, etc.
Bob’s main loves were his Catholic faith, family, sports, and music. He was a quiet, faith-filled man with a close relationship with God. In his early years he belonged to the Knights of Columbus, coached children in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), and recently sponsored his dear friend Steve in becoming Catholic. Regarding sports, golf was his personal favorite and passion throughout his entire life. Since he didn’t have a father, at a very young age, his uncle Lou made him his first golf club out of a stick and a block of wood. He loved his wife Karen and would do anything for her. One example is driving out at night in a snowstorm to get her a hot fudge sundae from UDF. Anything she needed; he was there. At a young age he played CYO basketball and to understand the game of soccer better, he joined a men’s soccer team in his 40’s and coached both of his daughters winning select soccer teams; Lakota Thunder ’76 (Tracy) and Lakota Thunder ’80 (Tara). He loved all music but in his later years he really loved country, knowing all the words, and singing at the top of his lungs when one of his favorites played.
May you rest in peace and be reunited with those you love. We all know you especially wanted to meet the father you never knew and ask him to play a round of golf.
