Robert E. Hasselfeld

November 14, 1935 — November 11, 2020

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE VETERAN

Robert “Bob” E. Hasselfeld, Jr, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 in his home in West Chester, Ohio.  He was a loving husband, father and grandad.

Bob was the beloved husband of Ann “Sherry” Hasselfeld and son of the late Robert E. Hasselfeld, Sr, and Elizabeth Marxer and brother of the late Margery O’Quinn.  Bob was the loving father of Nancy (Steve) Dawson and the late Robert (Kimberly) E. Hasselfeld, III, grandfather to Steve (Stacy) Dawson, Jr, Nick (Amanda) Dawson, the late Christopher Dawson, Jon Dawson, Kathryn Hasselfeld, Robert E. Hasselfeld, IV, Karolyn Hasselfeld and Elizabeth Hasselfeld, great grandfather to seven and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was born in a farmhouse in Troy, Missouri on November 14, 1935.  He had one older sister Marge, who passed away in May 2016.  When he was about seven he started hunting with his mother.  His mother was a good shot and passed that on to him.  Upon graduation from O’Fallon High School in Illinois, Bob joined the US Air Force at 18-years-of-age.  Following basic training he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base where he met his future wife Sherry and he was an instructor of Air Force radar and radio systems.

After the Air Force, Bob attended and then graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in electrical engineering.  He became a field engineer with General Electric and went to upper state New York to work on missile sites. He transferred to Huntsville, Alabama and worked with NASA to design and build the test and launch equipment for their Saturn 5 Missile – The Moon Shot program.  He worked on Apollo Missions 8, 15, and 16.

Bob also began working for the Sheriff in Madison County, AL, working on the undercover drug squad.  They averaged a raid a week which required many hours of surveillance to get a search warrant.

From Huntsville he moved to work with GE in Evendale, Ohio.  He joined the GE customer support service and averaged 3-4 months a year out of the country.  Bob retired from GE at age 60 and enjoyed 24 years of retirement.

He was a volunteer fireman for 10 years with the Union Township Fire Department (now West Chester).  He also graduated from the Ohio Police Academy and started his service with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on September 2, 1976 as a certified peace officer and special deputy.  Bob retired from the BC Sheriff’s office on April 16, 2019 after serving for nearly 43 years.

Bob loved his family and, in a heartbeat, he would have given his life to save any of them.  As we finally learned as he promised upon his death, his coded wrist tattoo meant “Man of God”.  He lived this deeply rooted conviction every day – he was a man of service to all he met.

Service will be private and for family only on Friday November 20, 2020.  Memorials directed to Hospice of Cincinnati.
